Nine months and some change

A is doing great. Her checkup for her 9 month appointment went well. The doctor seemed to think that she could have had a virus, but that she also has 4 teeth sitting up there waiting to come through, and that could have had something to do with the last 10 days of cold and flu-like symptoms.

She is just over 16 pounds and 28.5 inches tall. She is definitely on the skinny side of things!

Today, we went to Pea Pods - a preschool program at the Arboretum. It was so fun. K had a blast and also ate her first crunchy carrot. She'll eat them "mushy" but not raw. Well, guess I should have bought a bottle of Ranch dressing! That got her to eat the thing! I'll try it at home and see if it works again. We'll go there each Wednesday for the next 5 weeks.

Here are some photos to hold you over - we head to great gramma Lib's 90th birthday for the long weekend. Hoppy Easter!

K wanted to see the world yellow, so she stuck her gems onto my glasses.

We missed her 9 month photo appointment at JC Penney, so this is our try. I didn't want her photos to be with a crusty nose. I like this better anyway. Chillin' in her jammies after breakfast.

K - Ow! Something is in my eye!
Mom - It was probably just your hair swingin' by, poking it then leaving.
K - Like the mailman?
Mom - huh?
K - Like the mailman. He comes, pokes the doorbell, then leaves.

She sounded out "coconut". Her first independently read word with three syllables! Pretty cool.

January 2-10, 2009
Over the radio, the commercial for Menards began, and K's ears really perked up. When it went from the music to the voice over advertising this week's special on drywall, K was upset. "I liked that song. I want to hear the whole thing!" For anyone who has heard that song, you know how annoying it is and will understand how hilarious this is.
She continues to listen for it and this evening, she started humming it and asked me to tell her the words so she can sing it.
I will post a clip of the song if I can find one.

K woke up with a funny voice this morning and asked, "Mommy, when will my mouth sound like my mouth again?"

October 2008
K: Mom, is my tongue shiny?
M: Of course, you are a healthy girl.
Later in the bathroom, K rubs a soapy hand on her tongue.
M: Is that how you think your tongue gets shiny?
K: Mmm Hmm.

Well, I guess the threat of washing her mouth out with soap won't work. She has already developed a craving for Olay soap. Nice.

September 2008
On Sunday K and I were roasting a chicken. She was painting on the olive oil and sprinkling on the herbs. I knew that there would be the inevitable conversation - not where do babies come from, but where does our food come from. We make chicky sounds as we prepare our dinner.
At dinner, she starts talking to the bird:
K: (In falsetto, as if she is speaking to a baby) Hello Chicky. This won't hurt, my teeth are soft. It's cozy in my tummy. Thank you for dinner.
This one way conversation with her food continued for about 5 minutes. Guess we don't have a vegetarian here.

July 2008
We are at a restaurant and a woman stops to tell us that we have a lovely family (we get this a lot and cannot hear it enough!). C goes on after we say our thank you's to tell her that we were at the zoo for the day and had a great time.
Woman: "Oh, I am jealous!"
We all smile and say our well wishes for a wonderful weekend.
K then asks "Did we know her?"
Mom: "No, we don't know her. She was being friendly."
K: "But her name is Jealous."

As she is playing with her Fisher Price people, they are pretending to run errands together. I assume that she will have them run the errands that we run together, but no.

I look up from dinner to see what K is laughing about. She says, "Mommy, there is nothing in there" as she pulls on C's finger.

Mommy comes downstairs dressed in a suit for a job interview. K rarely even sees me with a shirt tucked in.

"Mommy, why are you wearing Daddy's clothes?"

K was priceless today. Two great quotes:
"She has a baby in her tummy!" "Just like when you had A in your tummy." "That's right. And you were in my tummy, too." "But I don't want to go back in your tummy. It was really dark."

Here are some highlights of the last few weeks of 2007 -
"When I get really tall, I wanna be a baseball player. And a fighter fighter (fire fighter for those who don't speak preschoolerese)."
I was talking to C about when we should take down the tree. Since I was feeling particularly lazy on New Years' Day, I was telling him the story about the 3 Wise Men and technically, we can wait another 5 days in honor of their journey bringing gifts to the baby Jesus. "Cheeses! Where's the cheeses??"

K loves to sing. At the top of her lungs, usually. We can tell that her preschool is preparing for the holiday party since she is singing Christmas songs I have never taught her. Today was "Frosting the Snowman".

K has been having some issues with not being the baby anymore. The other day we brought up the high chair for A. She looked at it and said "When I grow up, I will be a baby!"

"I think she's dead."
"What?"
"I think she's dead. She needs new batteries."

The best thing she does is when she starts getting frustrated, she holds out her hands and screams "hug!" in a very short, quick way. Just letting us know that she needs to be held, and of course, we oblige.

A just joined me at the polls for her first election. She then proudly wore the sticker at Starbucks so I could get a free cup of coffee.

Life as we know it is done. She is walking. As in, take a few steps, pick something up, come back. And, room to room. Never too many steps and not a quick walker, but definitely a life shift for all of us. K is her cheerleader and applauds every time she takes a few steps.

She thinks she is talking and she does it all the time. Lots of cute noises and K just eggs her on by repeating the sounds to her. Makes me think they already have secrets that only sisters keep.

She said "Ball"!! She already does Momma and sometimes Dada. And, there is a specific yell she does for K. But the excitement on her face when she saw me come in with a beach ball, and she blurted it out. I almost cried .

The tooth has retreated and not come back to show its lovely self. The gums must have swollen up around it.

WE HAVE A TOOTH! OK, so it is just a speck of white poking through, but it makes that "clink" noise on her spoon when she eats. So exciting!
And, keep posted. The crawl is about to happen. I am sure of it this time.

K&A had a sitter yesterday that hadn't been here in about a month. Here I was thinking that A hadn't changed much, but the sitter's mouth dropped open when she saw A sit on her own, roll over and over and over, "crawl", reach for her, eat solid foods, and try to eat Cheerios (some tries were successful, too!)

She still isn't crawling, but can move pretty well from one side of the room to the other just by rolling over. K keeps crawling around and around her to try and get her to move.
She also loves to pull hair. C is the only safe one in the house.

She is really working hard at crawling! She is much more comfortable on her tummy these days and is trying to reach the toys that K puts out in front of her. Of course, K loses patience and gives them to her after a few seconds. A will be 6 months in a few days. Time is surely flying by (but I wouldn't have said that a few months ago).
